Browse Publications

With full text documents and research bulletins made available by the National Informatics Institute's Electronic Library Service (NII-ELS), it is possible to browse the list of volumes/issues/table of contents by the name of the journal or the publishing organization.
This feature can be used for such purposes as determining whether a particular journal is in the database, reading back issues from a certain period, or browsing tables of contents to observe trends.
Access terms and rates for documents from each content-providing organization are also listed.

1. Search directory by name of journal, academic society

The "CiNii Journal with full text Directory" link shown in the left column of the front page will take you to the directory page.

NII-ELS Academic Journals and Research Bulletins

It is possible to search back from the journal name to NII-ELS and research bulletins at the same time.

■Academic Journals

"Academic Journals" provides a list of academic society's journals made available by NII-ELS
  • "Browse by Academic Society" enables searches for journals from the name of the publishing organization, as well as from research fields.
  • To view content available to institutions with fixed-price contracts, please select "Subscription" under "Journals by Conditions of Provision".
  • To view free content, please select "Open Access" under "Journals by Conditions of Provision."


■Research Bulletins

"Research Bulletins" provides access to lists of journals registered by universities, etc.

  • Research bulletins includes bulletins where the full text document is available (those under the control of the NII), those with external links (which may lead to the full text document), and those with bibliographic information only.
  • Full text research bulletins (those under the control of the NII) are offered as free content open to the public.

■Citation Database for Japanese Publications (CJP)

It is possible to look at works cited index database.


■NDLJPI Japanese Periodicals Index by National Diet Library (NDL)

Link to the list of records collected in the periodical article index database maintained by the National Diet Library.


■NII Repository of Electronic Journals and Online Publications (NII-REO)

Service where electronic journals requested by a university, library, consortium, etc., are provided under permission of their respective publishers. Please see the outline of the NII-REO service for the range of reading possible.

2. Search for articles from the list of journal names



    • A Title

      • Clicking on the journal name displays the list of registered volume/issue numbers.
    • B Conditions of Use

      • For full text documents of academic journals, each academic society has set conditions of provision such as Open Access content, Subscription content, Paid content, or Limited content.
      • If conditions apply to even a single volume/issue, the conditions are displayed in this column.
      • Clicking Conditions of Provision displays the access terms and rates for that journal.
      • *Full text documents of research bulletins are generally offered as free, open access content.
    • C Organization

      • Displays the name of the providing organization for a publication.
    • D Available Volumes

      • Displays the first and last volumes/issues registered.
      • Click the name of the journal for more information on the volumes/issues registered.
    • E To be incorporated

      • Displays the ELS access license range.
      • *Nothing is displayed for research bulletins.

3. View list of volumes/numbers

For each publication, see the back issues registered as well as the access terms and rates.



    • A Title; Name of providing organization; ISSN of printed/online version

      • The title of the selected journal, the providing organization, and its ISSN are displayed.
    • B To CiNii Books

      • クClicking on icon will take you to CiNii Books, and can see the publication information. CiNii Books enables you to view detailed information about publications and the libraries and universities, etc. holding them.

    • C Volume (number) (date of publication)

      • Volume, issue and date of publication are displayed in the format: volume(issue) (YearMonthDay)
        Example: 50(4)(20041230)
      • Click the issue to see its table of contents.
    • D Conditions of Use

      • he conditions of provision for the issue are displayed. Click to see more information on the conditions of provision.
      • *Research bulletins are generally offered as free, open access content.
      • *When the full text of a document is not available, the conditions of provision are not displayed.
      • *For more information on conditions of provision, please see NII-ELS Conditions of Provision.

4. View index

NII-ELS not only provides articles, but also converts academic society journals into cover-to-cover PDFs (advertisement pages excluded).
There are also cover-to-cover PDFs for some NII-ELS research bulletins.



    • A Registered article titles are displayed. Clicking displays the article's information and abstract.

    • B When the full text document is available, "Full text" is displayed.
      Clicking "CiNii" or "External" will display the full text document.

      [Note] According to the type of service (Pay Per View/Individual ID/Subscription) instructions to log in with user ID, choose payment method, etc. will be appear before the full text document is displayed. Please proceed according to the instructions.
