Updating of J-STAGE data has been restarted (December 28, 2012)

CiNii is including articles information and linking to fulltext of J-STAGE by JST (Japan Science and Technology Agency) when it is permitted by the publishing society.

It had been stopped from December 2011 updating of J-STAGE data because of system renovation of J-STAGE and interface between CiNii and J-STAGE.
But the updating has been restarted from December 2012.
It will be updated once in around 2 month temporarily.

Changes of CiNii Articles available journal list. (October 2, 2012)

At the TSV format list of journals full text available in CiNii Articles, "Limited" and "External Link" have been added to Package Type field in addition to "Open Access", "Subscription", and "Paid" which are already shown as a condition of provision of contents from October 2.
Multiple conditions are listed and separated by the "|".

Please note that the list includes only journals of NII-ELS (Academic Society Journals and Research Bulletins) from Databases Incorporated to CiNii Articles.

Fixed failure: links to CiNii Books was invalid with Internet Explorer 6 and 7, etc. (October 2, 2012)

Failures as the following had been occured from the modification on September 28.
These has been fixed on morning of today (Oct. 2).

• Links to CiNii Books on upper left of the window and upper right of the search box had been not able to click with Internet Explorer 6 and 7.
• Links to CiNii Books on header of Help pages had been not able to click with all web browsers.

New functions: Retaining search terms between CiNii Articles and Books, etc. (October 2, 2012)

We are pleased to announce that the following new functions are available on CiNii from September 28.

New common functions of CiNii Articles and Books.

• Retaining search terms between CiNii Articles and Books
  When you switch to another service by clicking "Articles" or "Books" button on the upper left of the screen or "Search Articles" or "Search Books" link on the upper right of a search box, it became possible to retain keywords you entered and display search results by these search terms.

Modifications to CiNii Articles

We have made following minor modifications and improvements.

• Modification of links from Author Details Page to Researcher Name Resolver
  Previously, all links to Researcher Name Resolver at the "Search this author in other sites" area were search link, but the links of some author whose identification of author ID is completed (ID starts with 1) have changed from search link to direct link.
  Data of "KAKEN - Database of Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research" is used to identify these IDs.
  


• Modification of output contents for reference management tools
  Following points are fixed.
  • For RefWorks, EndNote, Refer/BibIX, RIS, and BibTeX format, output of author name has changed so that family and first name are separated with a comma ",". It makes users easy to distinguish clearly between family and first name.
  • For output of BibTex format, year field has changed from year-month-day of publication to only year.
• Automatic redirect function of the CiNii PDF page
  Users could not direct access URL of CiNii PDF and the error message was displayed when access, now it will be redirected to Article Details Page.
  For PDFs which do not have details page (except articles. ex.: Table of contents or information page, etc.), it will be redirected to index pages of journal of CiNii Journal with full text Directory.

Modifications to CiNii Books
Several minor modifications and improvements are as follows.

• Fixed the lack of partial Alias Names on the author details page
  There was a malfunction that partial Alias Names (The heading based on cataloging rules which was not applied when deciding forms of the Uniform Heading) were not displayed, but it was fixed.


• Fixed the behavior when switching language setting (Japanese and English).
  Problem with switching which was not reflected only first time was fixed.


• Changed URL to include the number of display records per page and display order
  The number of display records per page and display order has not been included in URL with some exception, but now these are basically included.
  It makes users easy to share search results with others.

About modifications of API: For users who use OpenURL Sending Function by Link Resolver, etc. (October 2, 2012)

OpenURL output of CiNii Books has changed as follows from September 28.

• OpenURL 0.1:
  "Sid" parameter was added to output.
• OpenURL 1.0:
  "Sid", "ctx_ver", "url_ver", "ctx_enc" and "uft_val_fmt" were added to output.
  As a rft_val_fmt parameter, book (info:ofi/fmt:kev:mtx:book) is set for the record of Book, journal (rft_val_fmt=info:ofi/fmt:kev:mtx:journal) is set for the record of journal.

* These changes do not need to be dealt with by the persons in charge of an organization (library etc.)

New Title (September 25, 2012)

New function of CiNii Books: Saving the filter by holding libraries and area became possible. (September 14, 2012)

It became possible to save the filter which limit to books held by particular libraries or organizations or particular area from September 14.

When you submit search with entering the Library IDs, Organization IDs or selecting the Area from pull down list and checking the "Remember Lib. ID / Org. ID / Area" checkbox, your setting of limitation would be saved on Cookie of your web browser. (For one year)

After that the setting (limitation) will be valid if you start new search or if you back to CiNii Books after once you close the window or moved to other sites.
It would be useful for users such who want to search only libraries of the institution you belong to or users who want to research within libraries nearby.

Area limitation will be applied also on the list of holding libraries at Book & Journal Details Page.

You can find the Library ID (FAID) on the following page. NACSIS-CAT/ILL libraries search(in Japanese)

Multiple Library IDs and Organization IDs could be entered in the boxes. If there is more than one ID, books that are held by either library would be hit.

New functions of CiNii Books: Sorting by title, Filtering by Foregin areas of holding libraries, etc. (September 6, 2012)

Following four new functions on CiNii Books are now available from August 31, 2012.

1. Sorting search results by title
   
   

   "Title (A-Z) " and "Title (Z-A) " was added to the options of change display order pull down menu on the right side of the book & journal search results page.
   
   If there is a transcription of the title in the record, it is used for sorting. (Transcription in Japanese kana is inputted in the case of Japanese or Chinese titles, transcription in Hangeul in the case of Korean titles)
   Also if there is a transcription of the author name in the records, it is used for sorting when choosing author name from change display order pull down menu on the author search results page.

2. Refine the search by foreign areas of holding libraries.
   
   

   At the pull down menu of the Area for holding libraries in advanced search mode, the option outside Japan has changed from only "foreign" to each country. Now you can refine also by region like Europe or Asia and so on.

3. Addition of transcription for special characters or specific languages such as Chinese, Arabic, etc.
   
   

   The pinyin in the case of Chinese title and the alphabet transcription (Romanized) in the case of Arabic, Thai, Devanagari or Cyrillic and other specifil language title has been added to title transcription and became searchable.
   You can search them in the free word or title field of the book & journal search and author search.
   
   For the users of NACSIS-CAT: "Variant Readings" fields of NACSIS-CAT has been displayed and included in the search.
   Mappings of search field to input field are as follows.

   • Book & Journal Search
     
     • Title : "Title and Statement of Responsibility Area (TR)", "Variant Titles (VT)", "Contents of Works (CW)"
     • Author : "Author Link (AL)"
     • Free word : all the above

4. Fixed errors which occurred when using back button of Internet Explorer
   
   

   When using the back button of Internet Explorer to return to the book & journal details page, there were errors that holding libraries' list was not refined and display of social media links was failed, but these errors were fixed.
   

Links from CiNii to The Japanese Agricultural Sciences Index (JASI) are now available (August 27, 2012)

Links from CiNii to full text documents on The Japanese Agricultural Sciences Index (JASI) run by The Tsukuba Office, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Research Conuncil Secreraiat has been added.
If you see the button such as "Japanese Agricultural Sciences Index" or on the search result window or article details window of CiNii, they lead you to fulltext of Japanese Agricultural Sciences Index.

The Japanese Agricultural Sciences Index (JASI) is one of the databases on AGROPEDIA which is the integrated portal site for agriculture, forestry and fisheries research run byThe Tsukuba Office, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Research Conuncil Secreraiat. By JASI you can search for bibliographic information for articles published in agriculture-related scholarly journals in Japan. It mainly collects research papers published by independent administrative institution or municipal agriculture, forestry and fisheries research centers, etc. and also partial full text PDF are available.
CiNii incorporates these articles which has full text documents as search target.

We are pleased to announce that following new functions are available on CiNii from June 6, 2012.

1. Displaying cover pages on CiNii Books
   
   The cover page of the book will be displayed on book & journal details page.
   Only images of cover pages from Google Books are being used on a trial basis.
   If there are no images on Google Books, the cover page will not be displayed on the details page.
   
   
2. Linkages with social media
   
   "Tweet" button and Facebook's "Like" button are now available on the bottom-right side of the Article / Book & Journal details page.
   Please use these functions for sharing information on articles or books you're interested in with friends, or please use for as memos.
   
   
3. Export to Mendeley from CiNii Books
   
   It is now possible to export bibliographic information to reference management service "Mendeley" from CiNii Books as well as CiNii Articles.
   It is available from "Export" on the bottom-right side of the book & Journal details page.
   
   
4. Exact title match search for books / journals with your browser's search bar
   
   Exact title match search for books or journals within CiNii Books is added to the OpenSearch which can specify CiNii search to the browser's search bar.
   Web browsers such as Firefox or Internet Explorer 8 and 9, etc. are possible to add "CiNii Books - Exact title match" option to the search bar on each CiNii Books's page.
   (If you use Firefox, clicking on the down arrow icon of the left end of search box will display options)

5. Processing of search operators on CiNii Books is modified
   
   About search operators "&", "|" , "-" on CiNii Books, it became possible to use Japanese full-width (double-byte) characters in addition to English half-width characters. (Full-width characters have been acceptable on CiNii Articles)
   Also, an error that ignores priority of boolean search when using combination of some search operators is modified.

6. Change the words in English page
   
   The words of the function of refining the search for holding libraries on the Book & Journal Details Page of CiNii Books is modified.

New functions: Recognition of your institution on CiNii Books, exporting to reference manager, etc. (April 13, 2012)

We are pleased to announce that the following functions are available from April 2.

1. Recognition of your institution on CiNii Books
   

   The following will be displayed on Book & Journal Details Page if you are authenticated as an institutional user (accessing under IP addresses registered or logging in with Site License Individual IDs or Shibboleth IDs)

   • When your institution (universities etc.) is holding the book or journal, your library will be displayed on the top of libraries list.
   • Links for each institution such like link resolvers or other links set by libraries which already displayed on CiNii Articles will be also displayed at the "Search this Book / Journal in" area. (links by OpenURL format only.)
     *For Institutional Administrators: Links on CiNii Books will be updated once a week at early morning of Monday.

   User information such like you are institutional user or ID user and Login buttons are also displayed on CiNii Books now.

2. Export to reference management software.

   You can directly export citations of articles and books/journals to RefWorks, EndNote (including EndNote Web) (*1), Mendeley (*2).
   *1: Plugin is needed to export to EndNote.
   *2: Now Mendeley is available only on CiNii Articles.

   Export is available from select list at left side on Search Result Pages and link at right side on Details Pages.

   Other export functions are also improved.
   RIS format is added to export format. All export format is now available on the screen (not downloading files).

3. Other modifications
   

   Other functions added or modified are as follows.

   • Displaying DOIs
     If the article has the DOI, that will be displayed at "Codes" area on right side.

   • "Report a problem" function was added at Articles Details Pages.
     Reporting problem is available also on Details Pages as well as Search Result Pages. If there is any error in articles information, please notify us from "Report a problem" link at the lower right side.
   
   
   • Links to other sites are open as new windows (tabs.)
     Links to full texts in other sites such like Institutional Repositories, J-STAGE, links set by each institutions and exporting functions are now opened as new windows (tabs.)

   
   
   • Error of the sort by year is modified
     Note: This modify has been reflected on April 9 (JST)
     When the publication date has only year and month, it had been not ordered with which has year month and day.
     The problem was modified as the following order, 2011-01 -> 2011-01-dd -> 2011-02.

• For Administrator of Institutional users.

  The following is updated for administrators if institutional users.

  • Links by NCIDs is now available on CiNii Articles.
    
    Links by NCIDs is added to the link to Online Catalogs functions as well as ISSN links. If you are using the Online Catalogs (OPAC) which can receive links by NCIDs, please set it.
    You can set both URL for NCID and ISSN. NCID is sent as a parameter primarily. If the record has no NCID, then ISSN will be sent. If only one of them is set, link icons will be displayed only records which have that data (NCID or ISSN).

• For API users.

  The following is updated for administrators if institutional users.

  • Links by NCIDs is now available on CiNii Articles.
    It became possible to return RDF by judging from HTTP header without specifying its URL on CiNii Articles as well as CiNii Books.
    In the articles page (example:http://ci.nii.ac.jp/naid/130001006986/en/), author details page if a priority of "application/rdf+xml" is higher than others in the Accept field of a HTTP request header, it leads to URL of RDF.

Additional functions of CiNii Books such as exact title match search (February 28, 2012)

Upgraded features on February 16 include:

1. Exact title match search
   In Advanced search mode, the searching option exact title match is now available. If the "exact title match" checkbox is selected it will search for materials that match the whole title to search string exactly (not include sub title).
   It is possible to perform a prefix search by putting an asterisk (*) after the search terms.
   For API users: With OpenSearch, an exact title match can be specified by using the parameter "title_exact=true".
   
   
2. Additional search operators
   Now users can perform Boolean searches with additional logical operators same as CiNii Articles. AND searches can be performed by ampersand "&", OR by pipe "|" , NOT by placing a hyphen "-" before each term to negate.
   
   
3. Exporting from the book/journal details page
   It is now possible to export article information in Refer/BibIX, BibTeX, or TSV format from the book/journal details page as well as from the search results page.
   
   
4. Exporting in ISBD (International Standard Bibliographic Description) format
   Exporting in ISBD format is also available from the book/journal details page.
   
   
5. URLs for Electronic book/journal
   URLs for Electronic books and journals have been added to the details section of the book/journal details page when the data contains a URL.
   
   
6. The display format for each library's holding information has been changed in cases where one record includes multiple volumes
   The display format when the library is holding multiple volumes has been changed. The order has changed from item-by-item to volume-by-volume. There are three items for one volume, "Volume (vol. 1, vol. 2, etc)", "Classification", and "Registration Number (each library's registration number, etc.)".
   
   Example:
   Before: v. 1, v. 2, v. 3, v. 4, v. 5, v. 6 801||1, 801||2, 801||3, 801||4, 801||5, 801||6 00111111, 00222222, 00333333, 00444444, 00555555, 00666666
   After: v. 1 801||1 00111111, v. 2 801||2 00222222, v. 3 801||3 00333333, v. 4 801||4 00444444, v. 5 801||5 00555555, v. 6 801||6 00666666
   
   If both the "Classification" and the "Registration No." fields are empty, the volume will not be displayed because it is considered as currently not being held.

1. Login with your administrator ID and password at the Administrator login page.
   *The administrator ID is not the same as a CiNii individual ID.
   *Your Administrator ID and password are stated in the notification that has been sent to the contract person when the contract started.
   * If there are any changes for the current data, it needs to be modified before the renewal procedure.
2. Click "Renewal application".
3. Read the "Usage Regulations" and click "I Agree".
4. Update your institutional data and click "Next". (Your data for 2011 will be saved separately.)
5. Confirm your renewal data and click "Next".
6. The contract renewal has been completed. Please save your application number displayed for any inquiries.

2. About the renewal of CiNii on November 2011
CiNii was renewed on November 2011(JST). The new and upgraded features are below:

1. CiNii Books  http://ci.nii.ac.jp/books/
   
   CiNii Books is a service that enables searching of information on books and journals that are held in university libraries in Japan. It is possible to search for about 10 million titles held in 1200 university libraries (totaled over 100 million books), and about 1.5 million authors of these books that has been accumulated through the online cataloging system (NACSIS-CAT) which NII provides.
   The Existing article search service CiNii was renamed "CiNii Articles", and the part of design has been renewed.
   
   Features of CiNii Books
   • CiNii Books contains wide variety of books - recent books, classics, foreign books, CD, DVD,etc.
   • Users can check the list of libraries in Japan holding the books or journals they are searching for. It is possible to retrieve it by limiting specific areas and libraries.
   • Directly linking to the OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog) page of university libraries from book or journal page enables users to search for the details such as whether it is available now.
   • If the full text is provided by CiNii Articles, users can follow the link to the full text documents.
   • Offering Web APIs(Application Program Interface) are available from other systems and web services.
   
   Libraries connected to the online cataloging system (NACSIS-CAT) are able to set and display a link to their OPACs on CiNii Books by adding the data to information on connected library of NACSIS-CAT database, if their OPAC can receive NCID as a parameter.

2. Full Text Search (beta ver.)
   
   The full text search function (beta ver.) to search within the full text document provided by CiNii Articles is now available.
   CiNii performs automatic character recognition of the full text documents of Academic Society Journals or Research Bulletins in the CiNii database so that users can search within the full text. Search results include records which do not contain search words in the title and keywords, so users will come across articles they have not found before.
   External links such as "CiNii Link" or "IR FullText" or "J-STAGE" are not included in the full text search.
   
   

3. Renewal of Site License Individual ID
*For all the Site License Individual ID Users.

Sunday, April 1 - Thursday, May 31, 2012.
* The renewal period is limited only during the above dates.

 

[Instruction]

A Site License Individual ID is renewable only from a computer within the institution after April 1.
We will inform about the renewal of Site License Individual ID for the users by E-mail later.

From Jan. 23, "External Link"have been shown at lists of journals and volumes pages of CiNii Full Text Journal Directory if these journals which have been included to NII-ELS have links to Fulltext on external sites.
(They had been shown at only Table of Contents and Article Details pages.)
