Abstract

In this study, the authors first tried to determine whether or not children had some concepts of the human foetus before they were taught about it in elementary school science. Second, if such concepts existed, they intended to analyze them. The results were as follows : (1) Children who had not learned about the human foetus yet already held some concepts about it. (2) More than 70% of 5 th graders had some knowledge of the connection between the foetus and the mother's body, but about a half of them firmly believed that the navelon the foetus was connected with that of the mother. (3) The children did not yet understand eight basic subjects about the foetus (1. the uterus, 2. the amniotic fluid and the amnion, 3. the posture of foetus in the mother's body, especially the position of the head, 4. the umbilical cord and the placenta, 5. the blood and its circulation, 6. respiration, 7. the ingestion of nutrition, and 8. the excretion of wastes). Furthermore, on the basis of the above findings, the authors devised some teaching materials by which the children can learn about each of these eight subjects.
