Abstract
The Long-Distance Ferries, Suzuran and Suisen, have been developed by IHI for delivery to Shin Nihonkai Ferry Co., Ltd. Two main engines of DU-S.E.M.T-Pielstick 18 PC 4-2 B medium speed diesel engines were installed for main propulsion system. These engines have the highest output/set among the existing medium speed engines in the world, which enabled realization of excellent propulsive performance to have a service speed of 29.4 knots. The ships have been placed into daily service, which reduced one round trip from three days to two days, on the Tsuruga-Otaru route as originally planned. The economical and technical target of this development have been proven to success through the commercial operation during five months after delivery.
