The redox kinetics of the reaction NpO<SUB>2</SUB><SUP>+</SUP>(3/2)H<SUP>+</SUP>+(1/2)NO<SUB>3</SUB><SUP>-</SUP>=NpO<SUB>2</SUB><SUP>2+</SUP>+(1/2)HNO<SUB>2</SUB>+(1/2)H<SUB>2</SUB>O was studied in 3 to 6M nitric acid solution by the extraction of tracer <SUP>239</SUP>Np into TBP or TOPO in dodecane. Considering the changes in the activity coefficients of the relevant species in nitric acid solutions, the rate constant in the equation, -d[Np(V)]/dt=k<SUB>f</SUB>[Np(V)]-k<SUB>r</SUB>[Np(VI)], has been shown to be expressed by k<SUB>f</SUB>=10<SUP>-1.21</SUP>[HNO<SUB>3</SUB>]<SUB>t</SUB>[HNO<SUB>2</SUB>]<SUP>1/2</SUP>(y<SUB>s</SUB>y<SUB>u</SUB><SUP>1/2</SUP>/a<SUB>w</SUB><SUP>1/2</SUP>), where y<SUB>s</SUB> is the stoichiometric activity coefficient of nitric acid, y<SUB>u</SUB> the activity coefficient of HNO<SUB>2</SUB> and a<SUB>w</SUB> the rational activity of water.
