Adsorption Properties of Europium on Granulated α-Zirconium Phosphate

Adsorption behavior of Eu<SUP>3+</SUP> on granulated a-zirconium phosphate (α-ZrP) has been studied by batch and column methods. The distribution coefficients (K<SUB>d</SUB>) of Eu<SUP>3+</SUP> into α-ZrP increased with equilibrium pH, suggesting ion-exchange adsorption. The K<SUB>d</SUB> values were in the order of Eu<SUP>3+</SUP>>Cs<SUP>+></SUP>Sr<SUP>2+</SUP>>Co<SUP>2+</SUP>>Na<SUP>+</SUP>. An expansion of interlayer distance of α-ZrP in the presence of Na<SUP>+</SUP> enables the large hydrated Eu<SUP>3+</SUP> ions to be adsorbed on this exchanger, and the adsorption isotherm of Eu<SUP>3+</SUP> ions followed Freundlich's adsorption formula. The granulated α-ZrP has high thermal stability and acid resistance. The breakthrough capacity for Eu<SUP>3+</SUP> linearly increased with pH of the effluent.
