Relatively large crystals of grandite garnet have been obtained by hydrothermally treating reagent mixtures of CaCO3, Al2O3, Fe2O3 and SiO2 at 500, 600 and 700°C. The crystals show two types of forms: i) only dodecahedron, and ii) dodecahedron with trapezohedral faces. The first form appears in grossular and iron-poor garnet (<20 mole % in andradite molecule), while the second form tends to appear in the case that iron is rich (>40 mole %). This fact suggests that the morphology of grandite garnet largely depend on the iron/aluminum ratio in the system. The garnets synthesized in another series of runs, however, show only dodecahedron independently of their compositions. Accordingly, CO2 pressure, pH and so on as well as composition and temperature seem to be also important for determining the morphology.
