Abstract
In conventional procedures for vapor-phase (VP) -formaldehyde finishing, cotton fabrics are pretreated with sodium hydroxide solution/liquid ammonia to relax the strain within cotton fibers, and then finished with VP-formaldehyde. The problem arisen from this finishing is to decrease considerably in the mechanical properties, especially the tensile strength of cotton fibers. In this study, an attempt was made to improve the mechanical by introducing cross-linking agent, dimethyloldihydroxyethyleneurea (DMDHEU) for post-cure method. For this purpose, the effect of additives such as ethyleneurea (EU) and dihydroxyethyleneurea (DHEU) was examined. it was found that the addition of DHEU is very effective to improve the tensile strength of cotton fabrics treated with VP-formaldehyde. The results obtained were also discussed in terms of the relation between Wash & Wear (W & W) properties and the tensile strength of the cotton fabrics treated.
