Higher impact resistance at low temperatures are required in the numerous parts of the spheroidal graphite cast iron. The effects of chemical compositions, especially silicon content, on impact characteristics were studied by Charpy impact test using the machined test pieces and test pieces with casting skin surface. Moreover, the fall impact test was used to evaluate the impact strength of products. The results confirmed the need to control the silicon content to 2.3mass% and below even in thin section castings.
