Hydroxy-terminated poly(oxytetramethylene) with ionic sites in the end of segments (HA-PT) was synthesized by the cationic polymerization of tetrahydrofuran using (CF3SO2)2O at 0°C and the termination reaction by using excess of 2-dimethylaminoethanol for a polyurethane synthesis. The molecular weight of HA-PT was ca. 2300. Toluene-2, 4-diisocyanate (TDI) was slowly reacted with HA-PT in dimethyl sulf oxide at 90°C. The obtained polyemr (PUC) was confirmed to be a new polyurethane cationomer by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, <i>i.e</i>., the cationic site existed between the polyether and urethane linkage in PUC. The PUC film prepared by casting from the methanol solution of PUC was an elastomer.
