This paper is a research report related to the treatment of drains at soybean food (tofu) manufacturing plants.
Drains from such plants can be classified as immersion drain, yosekomi drain and sarashi drain; these drains were treated by three kinds of ultrafilter membranes with the fractional molecular weights of 100, 000, 10, 000 and 3, 000. Regardless of the difference in fractional molecular weight of the membrane, most of the contaminated substances in drains were organic compounds with their molecular weights not exceeding 3000. Also, from the results of the analysis by gel chromatograph, two kinds of proteins having about 2000 and 3000 of the molecular weights were included in such drains.
The improvement of the quality of water was aimed to decrease organismic carbon substances and to remove cations, i.e., Mg2+ ion, Ca2+ ion and NH4+ ion; we tried to utilize activated charcoal for the former, and synthetic zeolite due to the adsorption removal for the latter against sarashi drain. As a result, the cation adsorption with zeolite reached equilibrium after 20 minutes and the quality of water was comparable to that of the service water. However, it was unable to adsorb and decrease organismic carbon substancs, regardless of the use of activated charcoal.
