The calcium phosphates such as dibasic calcium phosphate dihydrate (DCPD), α-tricalcium phosphate (α-TCP) and β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) were hydothermally treated with calcium-alumino-silicate glasses. The reaction products were measured by XRD and the compressive strength was also measured. The glasses had compositions of SiO2 of about 40 mass%, CaO of 30 to 50 mass% and Al2O3 of 10 to 30 mass%. The hydrothermal treatment were performed up to 250°C. Monolithic DCPD did not harden nor produce hydroxyapatite (HAp) but produced DCP anhydride (DCPA) at high temperature. However, when there was glass with a high content of CaO, this mixtures produced HAp and hardened. Monolithic α-TCP hydrated easily and developed high strength at 105°C, but decreased in strength at higher temperatures. During hydration, α-TCP transformed to β-TCP. Monolithic β-TCP can react and harden but the reactivity is lower than α-TCP. β-TCP might be converted once to DCPA then after hydrated to HAp.
