Abstract

The influence of fly ash particle size on the performances of fly ash cement (FAC for short) was studied. With the grey system theory, the relationship between particle size distribution of fly ash and FAC strength was discussed. The results showed that the particle size of fly ash had a considerable effect on FAC strength; fly ash particles of 10-24, μm in diameters were maximally correlative with FAC strength and they made bigger contributions both to 7 d and 28 d compressive strength than those with other diameters; the particles larger than 30 μm in diameters had a negative effect on FAC strength. Based on the effect of fly ash particle size on FAC strength, the authors suggested that one method of improving FAC strength is to grind fly ash before adding it to cement, due to the increase in content of<30 μm particles and the decrease in that of>45μm particles.
