A field study of Carrion Crows Corvus corone corone was carried out from March 1991 to February 1992 in Takatsuki City, Osaka, Japan. The 57 ha study area consisted of cultivated fields and residential areas. One pair of Carrion Crows (the female of which was color ringed) was observed continuously for two days each month. These observations revealed that: (1)The pair's year round activities were restricted to a 22 ha to 29 ha home range within the study area, except during the period of winter roosting. (2) Pairs frequently, and throughout the year, took defensive action against other Carrion Crows trespassing on their home range. Defensive action was weaker in the marginal area of the range during the post-breeding (July-October) and non-breeding (November-February) periods, than during the breeding season (March-June). (3) Threats and"glares" were observed, along the borders of home ranges, between neighbouring pairs. These behaviours differed completely from the defensive action taken against other Carrion Crows trespassing in to their territory. (4) During the breeding season, the area where defensive responses were observed corresponded to the home range, which was defended as a territory. Although territories were maintained all year round, during the post-breeding and non-breeding periods, defensive actions were less intense in marginal areas, although the homerange was still used exclusively during these periods. (5) Carrion Crow pairs took defensive action against Jungle Crows Corvus macrorhynchos, but far less frequently than against conspecifics.
