Abstract

Dynamo currents and resulting geomagnetic variations induced by neutral winds simulated by Middle Atmosphere Circulation Model at Kyushu University (MACMKU) are examined. Assuming a steady (having a diurnal cycle but no day-to-day variation) conductivity in the dynamo region, dynamo currents induced by the neutral winds and an additional prescribed steady diurnal (1, -2) mode to supply the in situ tides, those are not included in MACMKU, are calculated for the 10 days of the perpetual October 1st condition. As a result of neutral winds fluctuation superposed on the prescribed regular (1, -2) mode, Sq shows day-to-day and time-to-time variations. The present result suggests that neutral winds fluctuations propagated from below can induce significant day-to-day and time-to-time Sq variations even though the electromagnetic environment in the lower thermosphere is kept in a steady state.
