Abstract

The structures and functions of LB films were controlled using three methods. The first one employs a trigger molecule, hexatriacontane in this case, which controls the orientation and aggregate structures of nonamphiphilic porphyrin derivatives in the LB films. In the absence of the trigger molecule, the macrocycle of the porphyrin is inclined with respect to the film surface, while the porphyrin stands almost vertically in the presence of the trigger molecule. The second one takes advantage of the formation of the polyion complex at the air-water interface. The structure of the LB film of an azobenzene derivative and hence the photoisomerization of the azobenzene depend strongly on the polyion species. The last one relies on the photoisomerization of azobenzene in the LB films. The photoisomerization triggers the structure change of the LB films, giving rise to conductivity switching of the LB films and also change in aggregate structure of the co-existing cyanine molecule.
