The simulated moving-bed apparatus was successfully applied to separation of two components on industrial scale. The authors applied this apparatus to the simultaneous reaction-separation processes, as a continuous chromatographic reactor. As an example of the application of the simulated moving-bed reactor to the reversible reactions, the production of β-phenethyl acetate was carried out. Proton type ion exchange resin was used as catalyst. The same resin acted as adsorbent. An overall esterification conversion of 99%, far beyond the equilibrium conversion of 63%, was obtained. Furthermore, the simulated moving-bed adsorber, combined with the immobilized enzyme reactor, was applied to the production of high fructose syrup from glucose-fructose mixture, by the isomerization reaction. Y type zeolite was used as adsorbent. A higher fraction of fructose was obtained with this apparatus as compared with the simple separation process of the glucose-fructose mixture. As a result, the simulated moving bed proved to be a promising apparatus for the simultaneous reaction-separation processes of a variety of industrial reactions. In addition, two numerical models, the intermittent moving-bed model and the continuous moving-bed model, were proposed to represent the simulated moving bed. The calculated results were in good agreement with the experimental results.
