Abstract

It has been experimentally proved by author's laboratory tests that some specific Polypropylene Glycol (PPG) serve as highly effective drilling fluids additive for controlling water sensitive shale and improving fluids properties such as lubricity, rheology, filtration, etc. Especially, PPG gives any type of water-base drilling fluids greatly improved lubricity. Besides, PPG decreases lubricity coefficient of water-base drilling fluids as low as that of oil base drilling fluids, when used in combination with conventional water soluble mud lubricant.
Based on these laboratory tests, KCl/Polymer mud added with 2.0-5.0% of PPG was used for drilling the horizontal well, onshore Akita, and the extended reach well, offshore Iwaki. The horizontal well was drilled to total depth of 3060m having 500m of horizontal section, and the extended reach well was drilled to depth of 4984m with 3980m of horizontal reach at total depth.
These two wells were successfully drilled as planed. By addition of PPG, lubricity coefficient of drilling fluid was maintained under 0.2, as low as oil base muds. Caliper logging presented in gauge hole.
