After prohibition of studded tires of motor vehicles in Sapporo-city, slippery snow and ice on roads became a social problem. Snow on a road in Sapporo was surveyed during the night of March 5-6 1994, when the snow fell in the daytime ; meteorological and traffic data were collected together with snow and ice samples for thin section analysis. It was found that ice films, about 0.2-4.0mm thick, were formed on the surface of compacted snow ; the ice film was refrozen snow melt due to vehicle traffic. The occurrence of ice film depends chiefly on traffic volume and the amount of precipitation. Vehicle exhaust materials also increase melting of snow and ice on roads in addition to the frictional heat generated from vehicle slipping.
