Abstract
Experiments on saline gravity currents are carried out to investigate the dynamics of flow type and powder type avalanches. The inclined wall plumes can simulate the flow type avalanches, while the inclined wall thermals can simulate the powder type avalanches. The experimental results are compared with the numerical solutions of simulation models for both types of avalanches. The numerical results of both models can explain well the experimental results of the inclined plumes and thermals. These models are applicable to the actual scale of avalanches, if the parameters can be calibrated reasonably.
