To examine the effects of heterogeneity of internal density affecting the stability of fall attitude of cone-like graupel, densities of apex part and base part were measured for eight snowfalls.In addition, the relation between apex angle and tumbling motion of cone-like graupel was reanalysed on the data of free-fall attitude.When the bulk density is less than about 0.3 g·cm-3, the density difference between the apex part and the base part is small, and the apex angle θ, affects the tumbling motion.When θ>θ*, the cone-like graupel falls with perfect tumble(complete apex downward), and when θ<θ* the graupel falls with imperfect tumble(incomplete apex downward).Here, θ* is defined with the following(Jayaweera and Mason, 1965), θ*=0.68 h/r+π/4, where h is the height of base convex and r the radius of the base.<BR>When the bulk density is larger than about 0.3 g·cm-3, the density of base part is considerably larger than that of apex part, thus the fall attitude may be stabililzed and perfect tumbles may be lessened.It is suggested that the possibility of growth of cone-like graupel to about 1 cm in size or the cone-like hailstones.
