Abstract
Since 1963–65, high voltage electron microscopes and their related accessaries have been rapidly developed and widely applied to the materials science, especially in Japan. Various sorts of in-situ experiments have been carried out with these electron microscopes in addition to precise characterization and identification of microstructures. Furthermore, recently new research fields named “high-energy electron beam science and engineering” have been developed with ultra-high voltage electron microscopes, and in-situ formation of new functional materials such as non-equilibrium phases has also been made possible.<BR>This account deals with great advantages of ultra-high voltage electron microscopy and its applications to the aforementioned new research fields in materials science.
