Abstract
Stress transfer between fiber and matrix in a single fiber reinforced composite with fiber breaks is analyzed. The model is based on a concentric cylinder model and considers an interphase layer between the fiber and matrix. Account is taken of thermal residual stresses arising from a mismatch between the fiber, matrix and interphase. In addition, Poisson's ratio mismatches are also taken into account. Stress and displacement fields in a single fiber composite under uniaxial tension in fiber direction are analyzed. The analytical results are shown for a single fiber composite with interphase of various elastic properties. Young's modulus reduction of composite due to fiber break is also predicted. The analysis would be useful for interpreting exprimental data of fragmentation tests.
