Abstract

The mechanism of acid rain etching of acrylic-melamine clearcoats has been studied using 70 wt% sulfuric acid as a model reagent for concentrated acid rain on automotive bodies. Free acrylic-melamine coating films were immersed in 70 wt% sulfuric acid at 60°C and the extracted substances were analyzed by IR and elemental analysis.
It was found that the extracted substances contained triazine structure and had elemental composition of a partial-methylolmelamine. These results indicated that sulfuric acid decomposed melamine-crosslinker to partial-methylolmelamine but not to water-soluble compounds such as cyanuric acid.
The acid rain etching is caused by the extraction of the melamine resin by the concentrated sulfuric acid.
