The Tonankai earthquake (M 7.9), which caused severe damage due to tsunamis and strong motions, occurred on December 7, 1944, in Kumano-nada, off Mie Prefecture. Poor information of the damage remained because of the press control during the World War 2.<BR>A questionnaire intensity survey was carried out for the purpose of investigating the earthquake damage in southern Gifu and eastern Shiga Prefectures. About three thousand questionnaire sheets were distributed and about one thousand answers were returned. Seismic intensities were estimated as V (in JAM scale) in the southern part and IV in the northern part of the surveyed area in southern Gifu Prefecture. The highest seismic intensity in Gifu Prefecture was estimated for an area on the lower parts of the three large rivers, the so-called “Kiso-sansen”, where the thick alluvial soils are deposited.
