We conducted boring samplings in order to identify local relative sea-level (RSL) variations during the mid-to-late Holocene in the Ako Plain, Hyogo Prefecture. Then we performed diatom assemblages and sulfur and tephra analyses of the sediment samples. The chronology is based on AMS-14C dates of shells and wood fragments and the eruption ages of K-Ah and Kg tephra layers. In the present study, diatoms, especially intertidal diatoms such as Pseudopodosira kosugii (Tanimura and Sato, 1997), are used to identify former sea levels. The RSL curve over the past 6, 800yrs BP is reconstructed as follows: (1) sea level remained low from 6, 800 to 5, 500yrs BP., with a stagnation of sea level between -1.50 and -0.75m (about -1m on average); (2) the sea rose to the present sea-level or above it from 5, 500 to 4, 700yrs BP.; (3) a minor sea-level fall occurred from 4, 700 to 3, 800yrs BP.; (4) sea level rose to +0.50m from 3, 800 to 3, 200yrs BP.; (5) a sea-level fall below the present sea level, which may correspond to the “Yayoi regression, ” was observed around 3, 200-2, 500yrs BP.; (6) sea level reached to the present level around 2, 500-1, 500yrs BP., and may have risen above the present level during the period from 1, 500 to 1, 000yrs BP.<br>Relative sea level observed in the Ako Plain is estimated to have been about -1-±0m during the period from 6, 000 to 5, 000yrs BP. This indicates subsidence in this area, probably induced by regional tectonic movements.
