The entanglement strength refers to the degree to which tangling parts are not broken under force acting on an interlaced yarn. The measurement of the entanglement strength is indispensable because interlaced yarns are required to have appropriate entanglement strength. The entanglement strength under constant force is called static entanglement strength, and that under changing force with time is called dynamic entanglement strength. In this paper, cyclic force is applied as the dynamic force. After characteristic values of yarn tension is defined, the relation of the dynamic entanglement strength, where the force is relatively similar to actual force, to the static entanglement strength, which is easy to measure, is discussed. As a result, dynamic yarn tension applied to the yarn can be divided into the average (the static component) and the amplitude (the dynamic component). The static and the dynamic components have an independent effect on the static entanglement strength and the difference between dynamic and static entanglement strengths, respectively. When the static component and the measurement time are fixed, with an increase in the dynamic component, the dynamic entanglement strength decreases in almost a straight line which starts at the static entanglement strength. Therefore, it is suggested that the dynamic entanglement strength at a dynamic component can be easily obtained only by measuring the static entanglement strength and the dynamic entanglement strength at one dynamic component. The condition that all tangling parts are broken when the weaving or knitting process is completed, is that both dynamic component and measurement time are more than certain values. The dynamic entanglement strength shows a variation with a maximum as a function of the supplied air pressure, monotonically increases with the feed ratio, and monotonically decreases with the yarn speed. When the static entanglement strength is large, the dynamic entanglement strength is large independently of yarn types and interlacing process conditions. The difference between the dynamic and the static entanglement strengths is small when the supplied air pressure and the feed ratio are large, and when the yarn speed is small. Both the entanglement strengths of yarns with large fineness of filaments are large.
