  Ferritization of spheroidal graphite cast iron (SGI) containing tin or copper has been investigated. The SGIs of different contents of copper or tin were isothermally held for various lengths of time below the eutectoid temperature after austenitizing. Tin in SGI promotes pearlite formation and retards ferrite formation, while copper in SGI retards both ferrite and pearlite formation. The onset of ferrite formation is markedly retarded in SGIs containing 1% Cu or above accompanied by an incubation period of transformation. Furthermore, growth rate of ferrite decreases with increasing copper content. Retardation of ferrite growth is brought about by the onset of pearlite formation. The growth rate of pearlite is markedly higher than that of ferrite, except at specific temperature range. It is found that ferrite formation tends to be retarded in the inner part of large SGI blocks containing 0.5 % Cu.
