Abstract

Reactive infiltration process which thermit type reaction takes place during infiltration, was investigated to form a hard particle rich layer on aluminum alloy castings. Pure aluminum powder and SiO2 particles were mixed and compacted. Then Al-Si alloy was poured into a mold containing the compact, and isothermally held at fixed temperature for a certain time. Consequently, the microstructure of product Al2O3 particle formed by the reduction of SiO2 is varied with holding temperature. The fine Al2O3 particles come into prominence with rising temperature. Even at 1273K, the long period of holding time is required to attain the finer Al2O3 particles dispersed in matrix. Although the porosity of the compact before reactive infiltration was about 30 %, it reduces with increasing temperature and holding time. At 1273K for 3.6 ks holding, a specimen shows the porosity of 6.2 %.
