Abstract

The effects of hardness of mating material on the rolling contact fatigue of ADI which were austempered at 648 K for 7.2ks were investigated using a Nishihara-type wear test machine with gear oil lubricant. A JIS S45C type of carbon steel was used as the mating material. The steel specimens were tempered at 533K, 588K, 658K, 709K, 763K and 803K for 7.2ks after water quenching from 1273K to obtain the different levels of hardness. The rolling fatigue limit (F) of ADI tends to increase as the hardness of the mating material decreased. F increases linearly with the decrease in ΔHmax, the difference between the maximum hardness of work-hardened layer of ADI and that of the mating material.
