Abstract

The polarizing optical microscopic analysis was applied to the estimation of the particle size on the spheroidal graphite in ductile iron by using optical uniaxial property of graphite. The image was stored from CCD to a computer for analyzing each pixel. The polarizing images of spheroidal graphite at the intersection can be explained from the optical calculation on the specific orientation of the graphite grains. The quantitative effects of thermal noise, dark current, surface topography and irregular orientation of graphite were reduced from the integration of the whole image data. From the comparison between the observed and calculated images, relation between the integration and the distance from the intersection to the center of the sphere was clarified. The theoretical formula was proposed to evaluate the radius of each spheroidal graphite grain.
