ADC10 die casting plates with several types of internal defects were cast using a 882kN cold-chamber die cast machine under different conditions including casting temperature, shot velocity, die temperature and shot time lag. Each plate was examined not only by X-ray CT analysis but also by direct observation, And the influence of the type and the amount of defects on tensile properties of die castings was investigated by tensile test of these plates. Internal defects can be classified into four categories ; blowhole, shrinkage porosity, flow porosity and scattered structure. By using X-ray CT analysis, the distribution of size and position of the internal defects can be measured with high accuracy, but the scattered structure can not be determined. The tensile properties depend on the morphology and quantity of the defects to a great extent. The tensile strength and the strain to failure are especially found to decrease proportionally with the increase in the rate of the defects measured at fracture surface.
