Formation of Conjugated Double Bonds in Poly(vinyl alcohol) Film under Irradiation with γ-Rays at Elevated Temperature

Irradiation with γ-rays promotes the formation of conjugated double bonds in a poly(vinyl alcohol) film at an elevated temperature. The unsaturation structures resulted by γ-irradiation were assigned to be mainly polyenones -(CH=CH)<SUB><I>n</I></SUB>-CO-, whereas thermal activation produces mainly polyenes, -(CH=CH)<SUB><I>n</I><SUP>-</SUP></SUB>.
