抄録

Coupled U-Th and ¹⁴C measurements on coral samples provided very promising results to extend the radiocarbon calibration curve back to 18, 000 BP (Bard et al., 1993). Based on these results, a radiocarbon calibration curve (and program) has recently been presented (Stuiver and Reimer, 1993) and is now widely used by Quaternary geologist. However, before ca., 12, 500y cal BP, the AMS-¹⁴C dates obtained from terrestrial macrofossils from the Swedish glacial varved clays (Björck et al., 1992; Wohlfarth et al., 1993) and from sediments in Lake Soppensee, Switzerland and Lake Holzmmar, Germany (Hajdas, 1993; Hajdas et al., 1993) and in Lake Suigetsu, Japan (Kitagawa et al., 1995) do not support on the radiocarbon calibration curve based on ²³⁰Th/²³⁴U and ¹⁴C measurements on corals. This discrepancy of the radiocarbon calibration curve from two different approaches suggests that the use of the radiocarbon calibration program during the last glacial period is too premature at present stage and the radiocarbon and U-Th dating methods must be examined in detail.
