Several deposits of the Last Interglacial Epoch under the Aso-4 pyroclastic flow deposit are distributed around Ariake Bay, Kyushu, southwestern Japan. The Miyuki Formation, with marine sediments at its middle horizon, has been newly found between the Aso-3 and Aso-4 pyroclastic flow deposits under the Kumamoto Plain. Lithofacies of the Miyuki Formation change from the basal gravel bed through the middle marine clay with a few gravels, to the upper gravel bed. The ages of the Aso-3 and Aso-4 pyroclastic flow deposits are estimated to be 120, 000 years BP and 80, 000 years BP, respectively. Consequently, the Miyuki Formation was composed of buried terrace deposits formed during the Obaradai Age of the Last Interglacial Epoch. Based on the deposition time and depth of the middle member of the Miyuki Formation, the subsidence rate in the Kumamoto Plain has been estimated. The subsidence rate is about 0.45mm/year in the eastern part and 0.90mm/year in the western part of the Kumamoto Plain.
