Abstract
The Niigata sand dunes are classified into three groups. The Recent Dunes I, II and III, in accordance with the geohistory of the formation. As a result of excavation and research in the sand dune area, we reached the following conclusions.
1. Relics of the beginnings of the early Jomon period were found on the Recent Dunes I-1 and of the late Jomon period were found on the Recent Dunes II. From this it may be inferred that these sand dunes were formed earlier than previous reports indicated.
2. Judging from the fact that the buried sand dunes were found under the alluvial plain, it was confirmed that those sand dunes were correlated with the Recent Dunes II.
3. As the result of heavy mineral analysis of sand grains of the Recent Dunes I-4 and II, we can hypothesize about the relation between the supply of sand grains and volcanic activity.
