Hydrolysis and condensation of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) with silica seed particles were carried out by a semi-batch operation for an efficient preparation of monodisperse silica particles with micron order size. In the reaction initiated by the continuous addition of TEOS, the nucleation of silica particles continued, regardless of the addition rate of TEOS. Monodisperse silica paticles of micron order size were efficiently obtained by the following semi-batch operation. The continuous addition of TEOS and water the reaction system after the transient batch process in which no nucleation takes place. It was also found that the diameter of silica particles given by the seed growth method of the semi-batch operation could be estimated accurately.
