Abstract
Composite particles composed of polystyrene and magnetite were prepared by suspension polymerization. A part of magnetite powder was treated by silane coupling agent in order to adjust the affinity for the liquid-liquid system. The treated magnetite was added into the continuous water phase prior to suspension polymerization. On the other hand, untreated magnetite was added after the start of polymerization. Coalescence between the polymer droplets vigorously occured by the addition of the stronger hydrophobic magnetite and the later addition of untreated magnetite.<BR>This addition method prepared the composite particles in which magnetite was included. An early addition of untreated magnetite prevented coalescence and prepared the composite particles uniformly coated by magnetite, irrespective of the degree of hydrophobicity.
