Abstract

In the motion analysis of mechanisms, the popular procedure is that objects are recognized first, then motions of the objects are measured. As recognizing objects is much more difficult than motion measurement, in order to avoid the difficulty of the former stage, in the practical motion analysis, markers are put on some defining points of the object and motions of the defined points are interpreted to the object motions.<BR>In this paper, the application of a PTV technique to motion analysis of joint structure mechanisms is examined. The method aims to measure motions of components and to identify them simultaneously. It consists of measurement of velocities using a PTV method and identification of the components utilizing information about angular displacements. The present method measures displacement vectors of markers applying the binary image correlation method, then in the following procedure, calculates local rotations which are able to be determined from measured local velocities. Once a distribution of rotation angles over the object is obtained, since angular displacement is uniform on a solid body, individual solid component of a mechanism as well as their motions can be identified easily. Results found to be quite satisfactory and promising for the purpose.
