Abstract
A technique to measure the instantaneous three-dimensional temperature distribution of water was established using two-color laser induced fluorescence (LIF). Ratio of fluorescence intensity of two fluorescence dye was calibrated against the temperature to eliminate the effect of the fluctuation of exciting light intensity. Stable thermally stratified layer was measured by this system to evaluate the total accuracy of the measurement system. A random error of the measurement was±1.4K with 95% confidence. Measurement of an unsteady penetrative convection showed typical structures e.g. plumes and ridges in temperature iso-surfaces and contours.
