Optical observations of ignition and burning processes in a two-dimensional valveless pulse combustor are carried out to examine the phases of termination and initiation of fresh inflows. The acoustic effects of the fresh inflow supply lines on the overall combustion characteristics are also clarified.<BR>A series of flash shadowgraphs show clearly the inflow processes of air and fuel into the combustion chamber, the formation and quick expansion of a pair of large scale fresh mixture eddies, and the outflow of combustion gas through the tailpipe. It is found, therefore, that the air flow terminates almost simultaneously with the fuel inflow, while the former initiates earlier than the latter by about a 1/4 period, suggesting a dominant acoustic influence of the upstream supply lines on the pulse combustion mechanism. Although blue flame appears only along the outline of the large eddies in the initial stage of pulse combustion, the blue flame zone expands quickly over the entire eddies, once the initial flame propagates deep into the eddies. It is also found that the period of the quick expansion agrees well with that of the steep pressure gradient.
