Abstract
In the practical use of the PIV systems, the original particle images are often pre-processed by noise filters and/or gray scale transforms in order to improve the image quality and reduce spurious vectors in the resultant PIV measurement. But it is possible that other types of differential filters or image operators are useful in some PIV images and are worth to be considered for trial. The present paper examines therefore the feasibility of differential filters and other operators for the use of preprocessing of the cross correlation PIV. Four types of particle images are employed for this examination and comparison is made between three differential filters and two image operators.
