Brillouin Scattering of Wurtzite-Type Crystals ZnO and ZnS under High Pressure

Pressure dependence of the elastic constants of the wurtzite-type crystals ZnO and ZnS has been measured by means of Brillouin scattering technique. It has turned out that the bonding character of the atomic bonds in ZnO and ZnS remains unchanged under pressure up to about 7 GPa and the anisotropy of the bonding is negligibly small in both cases. The acoustic mode Grüneisen constants γ (LA) and γ (TA) are discussed in relation to the ionicity and the pressure induced phase transition, respectively.
