Hydrostatic-pressure Effects in Gd_2O_2S : Eu^<3+>

The emission spectra of the Eu<SUP>3+</SUP> ion in Gd<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>2</SUB>S were measured in the pressure range of 0∼15 GPa. The experiments show that the crystal-field splittings of the <SUP>7</SUP>F<SUB>2-5</SUB> and <SUP>5</SUP>D<SUB>2</SUB> increase obviously with pressurization. The crystal-field parameters B<SUP>k</SUP><SUB>q</SUB> and the crystal-field strength parameter S were determined at different pressures. The Slater parameter F<SUB>2</SUB> and the spin-orbit coupling parameter ζ reduce with increasing pressure. The symmetry-restricted covalency mechanism acts a main part in the reductions of F<SUB>2</SUB> and ζ.
