Abstract
The merits of two activation modes in organic synthesis are compared: pressure and physicochemical activation. The latter mode considers hydrophobic effects arising from aggregation of organic molecules in water. Both activation types stimulate the reactivity of addition reactions such as [4+2] cycloadditions, Michael additions and Baylis-Hillman reactions. However, the effect of water is complex and usually not predictable whereas high pressure proves to be an excellent activation mode. Combination of both activation processes can lead to convergent syntheses.
