Abstract

Experimental work on supercritical extraction of tar sands bitumen with liquid CO2, supercritical CO2, propane, n-pentane and mixtures of with water and steam has been carried out in a high-pressure stainless steel autoclave under continuous flow conditions. Variables studied were pressure, temperature, flow rate, solvent composition and sample size. For extraction with supercritical CO2, only 22% of the bitumen could be extracted in 60 minutes. Higher recoveries were achieved with propoane and pentane. Supercritical CO2 and steam mixtures yielded 97% recovery of bitumen. Both CO2 and propane resulted in high degree of de-asphalting of the bitumen extract.
