Aluminum borate (9Al<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB>·2B<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB>) whiskers were coated with uniform films of chromium-containing deposits by using a hydrothermal technique in which a mixture of CrCl<SUB>3</SUB>, Na<SUB>2</SUB>C<SUB>4</SUB>H<SUB>4</SUB>O<SUB>6</SUB>, NaPH<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>2</SUB> and H<SUB>3</SUB>BO<SUB>3</SUB> is used as the coating solution. The morphology and characteristics of hydrothermal deposits were affected by composition of coating solution, temperature and reaction time. After 2-8 hours of heating at 800-850°C in air, smooth films composed mainly of hexagonal Cr<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB> were formed on whisker surface and the thickness was 0. 01-0. 02 μm.
