An Estimation for Atmospheric Sulfur Budget over the Japanese Archipelago.

Abstract

An atmospheric sulfur budget for terrestrial and coastal regions of the Japanese Archipelago during the latter half of the 1980's is presented . This region was divided into fifteen climatic regions with 114 mesh grids, and the annual and seasonal sulfur fluxes were estimated. Man-made and volcanic emission fluxes were estimated from the preliminary inventory by Fujita, biogenic emission flux was estimated by information in the literature, wet deposition flux was determined from CRIEPI's measurements, and dry deposition flux was calculated from modeling results by Fujita. Estimated man-made emissions and total depositions of sulfur in the Japanese Archipelago were about 435 GgS/y and 1, 050 GgS/y respectively. The four terms, man-made emission, volcanic emission, wet deposition and dry deposition were of similar magnitude while biogenic emission was relatively small, but all terms had considerable degrees of uncertainty . On average, the ratio of man-made emission to wet and dry depositions was more than 2 in the northern regions of the central mountain range, which face the Japanese Sea . On the other hand, this ratio was less than 2 in the southern regions in which industrial acitivity in Japan is concentrated. These budget calculations demonstrate that in the northern regions of the central mountain range, in-flow from outside plays an important role in the budget of sulfur. Meteorological analysis suggests that sulfate associated with high concentrations are continental in origin, which are transported by the northwesterly wind prevailing during the cold season.
