Environmental pollution from toxic chemicals such as dioxin or endocrine disrupters has now spread globally, and it is feared that its serious effects may include crises and destruction of all life and ecosystems. Environmental evaluation of chemicals are apt to discuss separately the effects on human health and on ecosystems, but I think it is important that both effects should be recognized as a common problem.<BR>When ecotoxicity of chemicals is discussed, evaluations of the structure and function of ecosystems should be done. It will be necessary to carry out chemical analysis and bioassays for environmental assessments of chemicals actually released to the environment. It is, however, impossible as a matter of fact to determine all chemicals on the market. Therefor, first of all, we should confirm the existence of chemicals by bioassays, and then we should determine chemicals. It is also desirable to evaluate the amount of risk. In this paper, I will discuss endpoints of ecotoxicity and the methods and conceptions of bioassays and then finally-as a case study the ecotoxicity evaluation of leachates from industrial waste landfills.
