Abstract

It is necessary to reduce ash volume and suggest an effective ash treatment prior to disposing of waste in a landfill. Therefore, much attention has been recently paid to some melting processes for solid waste incineration ash (SWIA) . In this study, the electromagnetic induction type melting process for SWIA was studied. The purpose of this study was to research the characteristics of ash melting using a graphite heater in an electromagnetic induction field as the energy source. The advantages of the electromagnetic melting process are down-sizing and a decrease in electricity consumption per dry ash weight. Thermogravimetry analysis was used to estimate the reaction behavior between graphite heater/ash, and to investigate the cause of graphite heat consumption during the ash melting process. The results indicate that graphite heater exhaustion is caused by an increase in oxygen pressure in the melting furnace, and that graphite heater consumption is caused by iron oxide contained in the ash.
